About the author
Born in Wales, in the days before home computers, Simon Meredith is a primary school teacher working and living in Kent. As well as being a teacher and author, he is also the lead vocalist in the 50s Rock n Roll band, Slim Si & the Smokin Aces. The arrival of a strange creature during the Great Summer Storm is the only clue that the end of the world has begun. With only with the help of his friends in the Chess Club and a magic stick given to them by the old man they saved in the abandoned chip shop, the battle to prevent what has happened to countless worlds across countless dimensions has started. Led by the creature named Grimble, legions of creatures will devour everything; from objects, to sounds and memories, until there is nothing left. Packed with scares, adventure and the power of friendship, Grimble is a quick, cinematic read that's perfect for middle grade readers. Think Stranger Things in a sleepy English village, where friendship is the only key to defeating unsurmountable evil.
In 1928, Cassie and her friends found something that shouldn't have been there, uncovering the curse that had plagued their town since its inception. A curse that almost destroyed them.

In 1986, moving to Hawthorne was supposed to be a fresh start for Tessa's family, but she hated the place from the start. When she learns about the disasters, disappearances and the strange tale of a possible curse on the town, its a mystery that she can't let go of. As she learns of the past from Cassie, she realises that not is the curse real, but it's something much darker and deeper than either of them had realised... and that the warning to Beware the Footprints, may be a warning that has come too late.

Alex, the most imaginative member of the Chess Club from the novel Grimble, thought that the day was going to be relatively normal, until he finds himself being chased by a huge, red dragon that seems intent on catching him, no matter what!

I hate Dragons predates Grimble, and was written for a short story competition with a 1000 words cap. It shows that everyday life for Alex can be a real struggle when the most extraordinary things happen to him.

This version has been slightly updated from the original 1996 text and comes with an author's note to the origin of Alex as a character.
An Alex short story, written exclusively for the website, especially for Christmas 2025.

It's been a little while since I delved back into Alex's imaginative world, having been busy working on the edit of 'Footprints' (see coming soon section), which is a completely different style and tone. So, with Christmas approaching, I thought that Alex would be the only one to experience the wonder of Christmas in a very different way.

Enjoy and have a very Merry Christmas!
An Alex short story, written especially for the website, as an aside to the mention of Alex battling a giant squid in Grimble.

"Usually, weird stuff only happened to Alex. Like the time he claimed he was attacked by a giant squid in the boy’s bathroom and that was the reason why he was soaking wet from head to toe." -Grimble

Find out what happened when Alex needed to use the bathroom before a science lesson.
